Redenta Soprano and Jack Kern - late August

Redenta Soprano & Jack Kern  came on board Skookumchuck, from Florida in late August in Juneau for the trip back to Sitka when Megan and Kelly departed. Newlyweds, themselves, 14 years ago. Quiet bays, glaciers, observing wildlife and a chance to get to the beach everyday were high on their list of things to do and see. We had a string of very nice weather, except when we came out of Baranof Warm Springs for the trip north. Oh well, a sailboat can go downwind in most anything. We saw lots of wildlife! Bears were everywhere it seemed. Their trip was to be the last one of the season and it couldn't have ended with nicer more gentle folks!

Early morning and very quiet!

Fresh bear tracks

Believe me, it was a fresh track! Bears were everywhere!

Cruise ship

We had to share the scenery this day! That's one of the big cruise
ships that bring thousand of passengers to see the glaciers every summer.

This USCG cutter evidently needed to see the glacier too! They said they were on a routine patrol of the area.

Ice and seals

Well, here it is. Just ice and lots of seals! No enemies in sight!

Bet the big cruise ship passengers don't get to do this! Jack and Redenta's favorite job was burning the burnable trash on their daily walks on the beaches.

Drying kelp

They probably don't get to do this either! Here, we're drying some kelp for Redenta to take home. Quite nice hanging in the sun like that.

Another quiet anchorage.

Silver salmon for dinner

A silver salmon for supper. Good for you Jack!

Redenta sketching in her book again! She was overwhelmed by the expansiveness and beauty of it all. Her sketches had real feelings in them!

Watching water flow

You never seem to get tired of watching water flowing down a mountain! Wonder why that is?

Or watching the animals who call this country home. There were three Sitka blacktail deer up there when we started looking. No time for a photograph let alone a sketch. Sorry Redenta.

Animal watching

What a nice trip with which to end the season! Redenta sketched and painted the wild flower bouquet that Cindy had picked for them and then gave her the original. A treasure I'm sure she'll keep always just as Jack and Redenta will always keep the memories of what they saw and did on their first trip to this wild and beautiful land.
