Skookumchuck Charters

Denny Forslund and buddies, April

Long time friend Denny Forslund, who has been a big part of Skookumchuck from the very beginning, brought two of his fishing buddies from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and joined us for an early season cruise in April. All "Yoopers" for sure! Bud Johnson and Jimmy Johnson (not related) are professional sport fishing trollers on Lake Superior. It was their first time to Alaska. People don't realize how nice an early season cruise can be!

Bud and Jimmy with their "obligatory" Kromers. Everyone from their
part of the country wears a hat like these!

Getting closer all the time. What an incredible day!

First tide water glacier And finally! Bud and Jimmy's first tide water glacier!

Jimmy in the skiff ,amidst floating ice, for a closer look.

Digging for clams

Of course, it wasn't all sailing or glaciers. Here's Bud and Jimmy
digging a bucket of clams.

And, when they weren't doing that, they were asking for something else to do. Here they are sanding on one of the shields for the navigation lights. They also did the door, hatch cover and fish hold trim. Thanks guys! You can come back anytime! Fine job, sanding

Catching crabs Even with the work, there was time to catch some crabs.

The hydraulic pot hauler is the easy way to pull the crab and shrimp pots especially if they happen to be down at 60 or 70 fathoms! The hydraulic pot hauler

Jimmy with some delicacies Jimmy with some delicacies from the bottom
of the sea!

Denny (in his summer Kromer) couldn't resist the fishing! Denny couldn't resist the fishing

What a day!

And what a fish! Good going Denny! All we
needed for the whole trip.

Good going Denny

Jimmy with more delicacies Jimmy with more "delicacies." This one we let go but octopus make fine eating especially when they get larger (The effort to clean one is significant!)

There were lots of "firsts" on this trip. Here the guys are making the  first ice cream ever on board Skookumchuck. We used glacier ice and rock salt to do the cooling and a lot of cranking! But, what a
treat! Making ice cream has become a ritual on every cruise since.

Captain whipping up something to eat Of course, you can't eat ice cream alone. Here's the captain whipping up a little something to go with it. (Yes, that's another summer Kromer you see.)

In fact, even though the photo is a bit
dark, here are four summer Kromers.
Left to right: Denny, Bud, Jimmy and Ted.

Against a backdrop like that, this could
be a one of a kind photo! It was a fun trip guys!
