Jim and Launi Mattson - Early June

My cousin, Jim Mattson (who I'd not seen in 43 years) and his wife Launi, came up from Texas and joined me for a cruise in early June. There was only one rule: no schedules or itinerary of any kind. Just some nice easy cruising with time to catch up on the past and perhaps see some wildlife and eat some fresh seafood along the way. It was also to be a long overdue honeymoon for them now that their kids were grown and out the door. When you come from Texas to Alaska' rainforest and still manage to get sunburned, you've had quite a treat whether you know it or not. It was grand a trip!

We had plenty of time to catch up on the past and we also got the seafood. Nice fish Launi!

Sorry cousin

Well, some of us caught more than others. Jim  had a sea lion challenge him on this one. Guess who lost? Sorry cousin!

There was also time for walks on the beach.

Time to disagree

And, of course, time to disagree on who saw what and where.

And some quiet time to check out the critters on the bottom with the
glass bottom bucket.

Quiet time

Plenty of shrimp to eat

There were plenty of shrimp to eat. Come on Launi it's not that bad!

OK Jim. You've reinstated your standing. Nice catch!

Nice catch

Besides getting in some sailing, and eating all the seafood we wanted, we actually got to see 9 brown bears at the same time on the beach in one of the small coves we anchored in for the evening. I know, I know. Photos are worth a thousand words! But, we did see them. Maybe next time we'll have time to see the glaciers. And, although we pretty much did catch up on all the intervening years, it was much too long a time for cousins to be apart. Launi and Jim even managed a kayaking lesson in Sitka after our cruise as well as some horse back riding in Juneau on their way back home.
